Aimable Karasira died at a hospital in Kigali shortly before he was due to be released from prison after serving a five-year sentence.
According to the Rwanda Correctional Service, Karasira was taken to hospital after allegedly consuming more than the prescribed amount of his medication. Authorities said they are waiting for a medical report to determine the exact cause of death.
Karasira, a former lecturer at the University of Rwanda, was widely known for his YouTube commentary criticizing the Rwandan government and the ruling RPF-Inkotanyi party. Last year, he was convicted of inciting division but acquitted of charges related to genocide denial, genocide justification, and causing public unrest.
