Following the deadly April 25, 2026 attacks that killed Mali’s Defense Minister General Sadio Camara, Transition President Assimi Goïta has taken direct control of the country’s military by appointing himself Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
At the same time, Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff, Oumar Diarra, was named Deputy Defense Minister to help oversee military operations and strategy.
The move signals a major shift in Mali’s security system, with power now centered around a unified military command. Authorities say the goal is to improve coordination, speed up decision-making, and strengthen the fight against jihadist and rebel groups after the coordinated nationwide attacks.
A former special forces officer, Goïta has focused heavily on security since taking power in 2020 and 2021. Under his leadership, Mali has increased military operations, strengthened the Armed Forces (FAMa), and pursued a policy of military sovereignty by reducing dependence on foreign forces and building new partnerships, especially with Russia.
Meanwhile, General Oumar Diarra is seen as a key strategist in asymmetric warfare and complex military operations. He is credited with improving battlefield coordination and boosting the operational capacity of the Malian army.
The new defense structure aims to centralize command, improve intelligence, adapt to hybrid threats, and make Mali’s army more capable of independently securing and controlling national territory.
