After 10 years Xi Jinping Welcomes Trump to a More Powerful and Confident China

As Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomes his American counterpart Donald Trump to Beijing this week, the US leader is likely to remember his previous visit to China in 2017 — a trip marked by extraordinary hospitality, including a lavish dinner inside Beijing’s Forbidden City, an honor never previously granted to an American president.

This week’s visit is also expected to feature a grand reception, with meetings planned at Zhongnanhai, the highly restricted compound where China’s top leaders live and govern.

However, despite the warm ceremony, several major challenges remain between the two countries. Iran has emerged as a fresh source of tension, adding to long-standing disputes over trade, technology, and Taiwan.

Much has changed since Trump’s last visit. China has grown stronger and more influential, while Xi, now serving a third term, is aggressively pushing forward his vision of “new productive forces” by investing heavily in renewable energy, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

According to Ali Wyne, a senior analyst and adviser on US-China relations at the International Crisis Group, China in 2017 was eager to demonstrate that it stood on equal footing with the United States.

Wyne explained that Chinese officials invested significant effort into diplomacy to portray Xi and Trump as equals on the global stage. But this time, he noted, Beijing appears far less concerned with proving parity.

He added that many in Washington now see China as “nearly equal” to the United States in global influence, describing Beijing as “probably the strongest competitor the United States has ever faced.”

The growing rivalry between the two powers is expected to dominate discussions. For years, China has worked to reduce its dependence on the United States as a primary trading partner.

Chinese exports to the US have dropped by around 20% in recent years, while the United States has fallen to China’s third-largest trading partner behind Southeast Asia and the European Union.

Trump’s highly celebrated reception during his earlier visit did little to prevent Washington from later imposing heavy tariffs on Chinese imports — a lesson Beijing has clearly not forgotten.
