Mali Arrests French National Over Alleged Espionage and Coup Plot
Mali’s military government says it has detained a French citizen accused of spying and working to destabilise the country. Officials allege Yann Vezilier acted for French intelligence, mobilising political figures, civil groups, and soldiers in a plot to overthrow the junta.
Security Minister Gen Daoud Aly Mohammedine announced the arrest on national TV, alongside news of two detained generals, including former Mopti governor Gen Abass Dembele. At least 55 soldiers are reportedly in custody.
Authorities say the suspects had backing from foreign states. France, Mali’s former colonial ruler, has not commented on the claims.
Mali has faced worsening Islamist insurgency since 2012, despite military takeovers in 2020 and 2021 aimed at restoring stability. Political tensions have grown, with recent arrests of ex-prime ministers Moussa Mara and Choguel Maïga.
The junta dissolved all political parties in May after anti-government protests. Leader Gen Asimi Goïta recently extended the transition period by five years, delaying elections until at least 2030.
Mali, along with Niger and Burkina Faso, has turned to Russian allies after ending security cooperation with France, but violence by jihadist groups continues.
